Translation, transcription & interpretation services
Historical documents often contain far more than words alone. They reflect the language, handwriting, administrative practices, and cultural context of the time in which they were created. Through our work in genealogy and archival research, we regularly encounter records written in multiple languages and scripts, allowing us to assist clients with a wide range of translation-related needs.
Document translation
We provide translations of both historical and contemporary documents, including:
- Birth, marriage, and death records
- Church registers
- Certificates and official extracts
- Personal letters and family documents
- Legal and administrative records
We work with documents written in a variety of languages commonly encountered in Central and Southeastern Europe, including Latin, German, Hungarian, Serbian, Croatian, Slovak, Slovenian, Bulgarian, Rusyn, and Old Church Slavonic, among others.
For an accurate quotation, we recommend sending a scanned copy or clear photograph of the document, together with a brief description of your requirements.
Transcription and deciphering
Many historical records can be difficult to read due to old handwriting styles, faded ink, archaic language, or damaged pages. We can assist with:
- Transcription of handwritten documents
- Deciphering historical handwriting
- Paleographic support for older records and manuscripts
Interpretation services
We offer interpretation services for clients visiting archives, churches, municipalities, cemeteries, and other institutions throughout Serbia and neighboring regions. This may also include arranging access to locations outside regular working hours. For example, churches in the region are often closed or open only for limited services, and visits may need to be coordinated in advance with church authorities.
If you require an interpreter, please provide:
- Approximate dates of the visit
- Number of participants
- Languages required
- Locations to be visited
This allows us to prepare a customized proposal based on your itinerary and specific requirements.
Translation of correspondence
We can assist with communication involving archives, churches, and government offices.
Whether you are requesting records, clarifying historical information, or maintaining ongoing correspondence, we can help ensure clear, accurate, and effective communication.
Specialized genealogical language services
Our expertise extends beyond standard translation. We frequently assist clients with:
- Historical terminology
- Genealogical and archival vocabulary
- Place-name identification
- Variations of personal names across languages
- Interpretation of historical records and administrative documents
Because of our background in genealogy and archival research, we are often able to provide context and explanations that go beyond a literal translation.
